Kildare Place School - Amber Flag Initiative 2021
We are thrilled to inform you of a very exciting new initiative that Kildare Place is now taking part in. Since March ’20, we have been cognisant of promoting joy and happiness, resilience and strength, whilst being caring and empathetic towards others. We know you, the school community have played an enormous part with your continuous support and guidance during our lockdown periods. When the pupils returned fully after Easter, all staff agreed that for the final term, emphasis would be put on pupils wellbeing, and in particular, building the resilience of all pupils in the school. You will be aware that tonight the annual PTA talk by Cliodhna O’Reilly is based on this very topic.
We were delighted to learn recently of the PIETA House Amber flag initiative, as it perfectly reflects the ongoing plans and actions that we as a school community have had in place since last March. These include the school garden, a focus on mindfulness and resilience, through positive affirmations and activities such as yoga in classrooms. The installation of our school garden/outdoor classroom has really helped towards this project! We therefore applied for, and have been accepted into the “Amber Flag” programme for schools. The Amber Flag aims to promote wellbeing and resilience in schools with successful schools being awarded a special flag to display to highlight their achievements.
- The Amber flag initiative aims to encourage schools to promote and actively bring about a culture change in the promotion of positive mental health within the educational system and other organisations.
- It enhances the already good work that is being done where mental health is concerned by offering an award.
- The Amber Flag will acknowledge these efforts and unite all schools in the promotion of Positive Mental Health.
Mental Health Awareness Day - As part of the programme, next Friday 30th April, the school will hold a “Mental Health Awareness day” to raise awareness about mental health in our pupils. As part of this fun day we are going to hold a “Silly Sock” event. This will celebrate and embrace our differences, sparking joy in the ordinary, for us all in the school community. We are asking the pupils and staff to wear their silliest socks they have that day and are suggesting that pupils might like to donate €2 towards Pieta House. We will also be having a special assembly and a variety of age appropriate activities planned for all class levels during the school day. Pupils will have the chance to reflect on the positive aspects of the lockdown period whilst addressing any fears/concerns they may have in a positive way.
Our silly sock day was a huge success - we raised over €500 for Pieta House
