Fourth Class meet a Viking!!!

Today a man called Iain Barber came in to talk to us about Vikings. A second man came too, an archeologist called David Swift. Iain told us the Vikings came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Iain also said the Swedish conquered Istanbul, the Danish conquered York and the Norwegians sailed in the Atlantic, passed several islands and landed in Dubh Linn (Dublin). For the first half we were in the classroom then after break we went down to the gym hall where Iain had laid out animal skins, animal teeth, skulls and various weapons. He told us how the Vikings lived and the different battles they had. It was really cool when we got to feel the spears, bones, jewellery etc. etc. etc. He told us about Thor with his silky red hair. He is a very funny man and it was a really enjoyable visit!!!

Today, Wednesday 3 February 2010, Ms Rankin arranged for a Viking visitor to teach us about the Vikings.

He talked to us about long boats and that they needed oars. He also talked about Vikings and Irish high kings. They had great battles.

We went to the gym hall after break. He was dressed in Viking clothes. He taught us about weaponry. He had a stick an axe, a helmet, a shield, animal skins and horns. He also passed around some shoes, a spear, a shield, amber, a necklace, bracelets, combs, a beard comb, a turtle shell, a Thor’s hammer, horns, a trumpet and a sheep’s skull.  We all gave him a clap at the end.
